Tom Sporkin Quoted in Wall Street Journal Article, "Vanguard Case Tests Right of Lawyer Whistleblowers"

Thomas A. Sporkin

Partner Tom Sporkin was quoted in Kirsten Grind and Jean Eaglesham's August 8, 2014 article, "Vanguard Case Tests Rights of Lawyer Whistleblowers," in the Wall Street Journal.

Thomas Sporkin, a partner at law firm Buckley LLP and former head of the SEC's office of market intelligence, said the agency "wants to encourage people in the know to be whistleblowers, which could include in-house lawyers. But tips from lawyers can raise very tricky issues, such as dealing with material that may be misappropriated or protected by attorney-client privilege."

The agency has set up "taint teams" to vet tips from in-house lawyers, to ensure it doesn't accidentally allow privileged material to be used in a probe, opening up the entire investigation to legal challenge, added Mr. Sporkin.
